What is a signature perfume scent?
A signature perfume is a scent or fragrance that is uniquely chosen by every individual. Have you been around someone quite often who always smelled the same, like all the time? Maybe perfume your mom swears grabbed your dad’s attention. Yup, That’s a signature scent, it becomes a part of your life. It’s like the person who just gets you, almost like a soulmate you can’t seem to let go of.
Your signature scent is here to help you become your best self, but it also works even better when it meshes with your body’s chemistry. Now not everyone automatically know’s their body chemistry nor do you need to know it. However, It’s a unique way to determine why something works and why something doesn’t. In this instance were talking about the way your body chemistry absorbs the product and or ingredients. This is why certain perfumes can smell amazing on someone else, but smell not so great on the next person. This is what makes finding a scent so much fun!
Understanding Fragrance Notes
Imagine perfume as a symphony. The top notes? They’re like the lively overture, hitting you with a burst of freshness. The middle notes? That’s where the harmony kicks in, bringing depth and complexity. And the base notes? They’re the grand finale, leaving a lasting impression. This is the structure of a perfume that can seem complex. But we will make it simple and break down the key components to pay attention too!
[ As always judging a fragrance based on its bases is not as important as your own personal preferences.]
Different base of a Perfume:
- Top notes are the lightest and most volatile of all the fragrance notes. The top note is what you smell when you first spray. The top notes eventually evaporate, but gives you the
- The Middle notes form the body of a perfume composition. This section is also considered the heart, it’s the true depth of the fragrance right after the top notes fade. This phase may last up to 7 hours.
- The Base notes are where you’ll find holding the very last impression of what the fragrance has to offer. These notes combine with the middle notes that create the long lasting effects. Usually you’ll find Vanilla, Musky, or Woody scents.
Perfume Personality Profiling
Now that we got the notes out the way, you’re probably wondering how do I actually decide what perfume to buy? Perfumes are a bit complex, they aren’t easy to discern, but that’s where you become the center of attention.
How are you the center of attention you ask…..?
Here’s how! Right now take a look at your fashion style or even future fashion inspiration. Would you say you are a minimalist or maximalist? Are you on the modest side or more sensual side? Are you someone who’s drawn to bright colors, unique pieces, and patterns?
What about your personality? Are you sassy? A Reserved type of person who doesn’t like attention? Maybe you’re going for something mystical, something that makes you feel free and alive? Or even something fresh and light because you work with children and don’t want to mess with anyone’s allergies?
By taking a look at ourselves we can find the answers. Just like the complexcity So always remember to seek inspiration from yourself to determine what works for you.
How to properly Test fragrances
Listen, this advice is important! Working in fragrance has been an amazing experience. From learning about the different notes down to how fragrances are made. Plus the extra commission was amazing, but forcing fragrances down customers throat wasn’t always fun. I want you to find your signature scent without the rush or worry.
Sampling and Testing fragrances takes time. especially if you’re new to this fragrance world. Here’s what I recommend:
- The first thing you want to do is research. You can follow some of the ways to find your scent through your fashion style, personality, or even just by watching youtube videos and hearing how someone else speaks about the fragrance. This gives you a heads start so you’re not warped away with what you actually want to try.
- Next, you want to go to your local shopping center, such as Nordstrom, Saks, Macys, or Sephora. This gives you the opportunity to really get to know the scents. Plus receive help from sales associates who can recommend different fragrances.
- The day of testing out fragrances, it’s recommended not to wear any perfumes or even use scented body washes. They can sometimes conflict with the smells of the fragrances you’re testing out.
- Wondering how many fragrances should you try? I’d say Usually testing 3-6 perfumes is recommended because it can get quite overwhelming. You may find yourself confused on how certain scents smell. So take your time..
- Important tip. Don’t judge the fragrance too soon. I’ve tested fragrances that didn’t give me the best smell at first application but soon as it dried, it had the most beautiful smell.
- Now most of the time you will test the perfumes out on paper strips. Another thing you can do is select the best ones you like and test it on your skin, wait a few minutes and decide it you like how it is absorbed,
- Lastly you can either decide that day on the fragrance or if you feel you need more time, ASK away for samples of 3 of your favorites.
